Which layer of Rome you walk
Rome piles eras onto the same street, so choosing a walk here means choosing a layer. Newcomers are well served by the ancient core, the Forum and the Palatine below the Colosseum, followed by the baroque squares between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. If you have been before, go by quarter: Trastevere over the river, the Ghetto with its portico and Jewish history, Monti behind the Forum, the Aventine for churches and quiet. St Peter's and the Vatican side make their own morning, and the lit alleys of the centre carry the ghost and mystery routes once it gets dark.
