The canal belt is a set of rings, and walking is how its layout finally makes sense. Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht curve outwards from the medieval core, with the Jordaan just beyond. A first walk that follows one ring and cuts back across the bridges gives you that shape. Later visits divide by theme. The occupation years and Jewish Amsterdam belong to the Plantage and Waterlooplein, hidden-corner walks slip into hofjes behind plain street doors, architecture themes read the gables, and the Wallen and the old churches carry the religion and ghost routes.
