In Lisbon the gradient decides more than the map does. Most people begin with the climb out of the Baixa through Alfama to the castle, which gathers the old city, the miradouros and the river view into a single morning. Later you are better off in one quarter at a time: Mouraria for fado and mixed history, Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real once the shops open, Graça for tiled facades and street art, Belém for the royal and seafaring chapter. Narrow evening lanes suit ghost routes and the corners that daylight walks pass by.
