The Seine keeps you oriented, which is why a first visit tends to run from the Île de la Cité past the Louvre into the Marais and leaves you with a usable mental map. Once the arrondissements make sense, take smaller ground: Saint-Germain for the literary cafés, Montmartre for the climb and the view, Belleville for street art, the covered passages off the Grands Boulevards when it rains. Market streets carry the food routes, and the churches and old cemeteries hold the quieter history, ghost stories included.
