London grew out of villages that ran into each other, so no single route holds it all. On a first visit the stretch from Westminster along the Thames to the Tower puts the royal and political landmarks in an order you can plan around. Come back and take a district instead: the lanes of the old City, Bankside and Southwark across the water, Soho and Bloomsbury for music and writers, Greenwich or Hampstead when you want parks and a long view.
