Reykjavík is small enough that one walk covers a genuine share of it. From the old harbour up to Hallgrímskirkja is a gentle climb through Laugavegur and the timber and corrugated-iron houses of Þingholt, and an orientation walk early in a trip makes the rest easier to plan. Beyond that the themes are local: food walks lean on the sea and on what Icelanders actually eat, while folklore routes work with elves, hidden people and the long dark, which here is less a gimmick than an old habit.
Reykjavík is small enough that a scheduled departure and a private booking cover much the same ground; the difference is who sets the time. A walk you join has a fixed start and company on the way. A private one runs for your party alone and starts when you say, which matters more here than elsewhere because daylight and weather decide the day.
Weather is the honest answer. Agreeing a time with your guide lets you move around a squall or a wind that makes the harbour front unpleasant. It also helps if you are here between flights, or want the route shaped around one neighbourhood.
